The present day St Andrew's Military Band started off as a Brass Band.
It was renamed as the present day SASMB in 1978. Through its years of
existence, the SASMB has achieved numerous accolades, made possible only
with the dedication and discipline of each individual band member and with the
help of the alumni members.
In June 1990, Mr David Anthony Glosz took over the role of bandmaster.
As part of God's providence, Mrs Felice Isaac, a Trustee of the Rueben
Manasseh Trust Fund wanted to donate a sum of $65000 at the very same
period and then principal Mr Harry Tan was asked if the school was
interested to accept that donation. That sum became the seed money to
begin buying quality instruments that would improve the band's musical
quality and bring it to its first gold.
The band has staged various public performances at local venues such as
the Botanic Gardens, the Istana and the World Trade Centre (Habour
Pavilion). In 2003, the band performed at MacRitchie Reservoir, and at
the Botanic Gardens, it was awarded “The Grooviest Band” when it took
part in Fiesta in the Garden”. The band also performed at the Paragon
for the President’s Children’s Charity and Kolam Ayer Community Club in
a National Day Observance ceremony.
In addition, the band regularly tours overseas and visited Hawaii in
1992, 1994 & 2000, California in 1994, Perth in 1996 & 2008, Melbourne
in 1998, Brisbane in 2002 & 2005, and was a guest of the California Band
Director's Association in Fresno, California in 2004. Sydney, Australia
in June 2010 and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in March 2007, 2009 & 2011
With Mr Glosz as Bandmaster, the band has won 10 consecutive Gold awards
at the Singapore Youth Festival's Central Judging of Bands from 1990 to
till present. The band received the Gold with Honours award at the
Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging of Bands in 2005, 2009 & 2011.
The band has a long and colorful history arising from its consistent
standards of performance. Much of this is sustained by a Bandmaster with
superb reading of musical nuances as well as passion for music making.
That passion has infected many, both in the band and in the school and
given the school another wonderful tradition.
